____________________________________________________________________ Employability Core Skills ProjectIn June 2008 Step Ahead were approached by Framework, a Nottingham Charity that supports homeless people and vulnerable adults. Their brief was to design a programme covering core work skills as well as some personal development to be delivered over an 8-week duration. As this is exactly the type of project that we were established to do we were delighted to be given such a great opportunity and were keen to lead this, exceptionally valuable project. The programme is delivered two days per week over 8 weeks and is part of a wider project that the charity is running. The project has three phases, of which the training programme is the first, followed by a period of voluntary work, usually between 3 and 6 months. The final stage of the project is an apprenticeship over 9 months, giving project participants an opportunity to gain first hand experience of the reality of a role in support work as well as an employment history of a whole year. Within the context of the project, the training programme offers participants both theory and experiential learning. Elements covered include Self Confidence, Motivation, Assertiveness and Communication skills on the personal development thread as well as the more work focussed Health and Safety, Rights & Responsibilities, Working with Others and Work Standards on the employment thread. The retention rate for participants is averaging at 97% and the first two programmes, which were completed in 2008, proved highly successful in moving participants closer to being work ready.
